Could We Follow Our Constitution for Once?

For the past 65 years the defence policies of Pakistan’s military establishment have revolved around our eastern border. Our archrival India was considered the biggest threat to the integrity and security of Pakistan for years. We fought three wars with our neighbor to the east and built our military strategy based on these real threats. Our military planners rightly thought that Pakistan was not in a position to win a conventional war with India and unconventional means were our only option. The possession of nuclear technology and being the first Islamic Nation to become atomic state became our deterrence. Both India and Pakistan realized that making peace with each other would ensure a bright future of the region.

The Green Book of Pakistan Army, for the year 2012-13, stated that the country is facing a greater threat from enemies within and from the west. The think tanks and decision makers in Pakistan Army have made the right turn at the right time. We have lost more than 40,000 lives, both civilians and military, not in a war against an invading army but in our war on terror. These terrorist organizations, lead by Al-Qaeda and Taliban in Pakistan, have attacked our most sensitive military installations including GHQ, WAH Cantt, Air Force and Naval bases. Our atomic deterrence has successfully blocked any adventurism from external enemies but now we badly need deterrence for internal threats.

The Green Book of Pakistan Army has shown the picture of an internal enemy, which is challenging the Green Book of Pakistan, yes, our constitution. These militant organizations have engaged Pakistan Army in an all out war for the last decade. Maulana Sufi Mohammad, Beitullah Mehsud and Hakimullah Mehsud are the faces of terror who have emerged as enemies of the Pakistani state. These anti-Pakistan leaders have also aided foreign militants in finding sanctuaries in North and South Waziristan.

The only deterrence to counter this internal threat is national consensus and unity. Al-Qaeda and Taliban operated organizations are taking advantage of divisions in our society, lawlessness, inequality and injustice in our country.

The most important Green Book of Pakistan, our constitution, guarantees equal rights and opportunities for all citizens. Unfortunately our corrupt ruling elite has interpreted the clauses of this sacred Green Book according to their own needs and desires. We are moving fast on the path of self-destruction with failing economy. Our ruling class has failed to provide fundamental rights to every citizen according to the Constitution of Pakistan.

We find ourselves in a constitutional crisis every few years as our system flip-flops between military and civilian rule. This is the time that we should start respecting our constitution and make necessary amendments for the betterment of the common Pakistani. Democracy is not the best revenge but it is the best system for people if it is implemented in true spirit.

If we fully obey and enforce the Green Book of Pakistan (our Constitution) then we could defeat the enemies operating within our borders, mentioned in the Green Book of Pakistan Army. These enemies could be illiteracy, poverty, hunger, inequality and their by-product– extremism and militancy in Pakistan.

Let’s make our constitution supreme and build a new Pakistan!
