Sarfaraz murder: SHC upholds convictions of Rangers personnel
Source: Geo News | 21-01-2014

Sindh High Court (SHC) Tuesday upheld the convictions by rejecting the appeals of the Rangers personnel in the Sarfaraz murder case, Geo News reported.

The court announcing its earlier reserved judgment acquitted Lance Naik Liaquat Ali and upheld the death sentence of constable Shahid Zafar.

Besides, the court also rejected the compromise agreement of the victim’s family forgiving all of the convicts in the name of God.

The judgment was reserved by the court in May last year after a division bench, headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, heard final arguments from deputy prosecutor general who had vehemently opposed the convicts’ appeals.

Shah was shot twice by the Rangers personnel and was left to die in the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park in Clifton on June 8, 2011. Initially, the Rangers claimed to have killed a robber in an encounter but their claim was refuted after a video footage, incidentally recorded by a private TV channel’s cameraman, was televised nationwide.

Sub-Inspector Bahur Rehman, Lance Naik Liaquat Ali, constable Mohammad Tariq, constable Minthar Ali, constable Mohammad Afzal and private contractor Afsar Khan were sentenced to life imprisonment, while a Rangers man, Shahid Zafar, was handed down the death sentence by an anti-terrorism court on August 12, 2011.
