Waqar demands more power if he becomes cricket coach
Source: Geo News | 22-11-2013

Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis demanded the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to have more authority including a proper say in the selection matters if he becomes the coach of the national cricket team.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will not be renewing current national team head coach Dav Whatmore’s contract that expires ahead of the Asia Cup in late February next year.

The PCB had said that Whatmore would not be seeking an extension in the job due to personal reasons. His last assignment with Pakistan will be the upcoming Sri Lanka series in the UAE in December.

Waqar is a top contender to replace Whatmore as head coach when the Australian’s contract expires in February saharasamay.com quoted a PCB source as saying.

It has been learnt that discussions in this regard had been held with Waqar and the PCB Chairman Najam Sethi recently in Lahore and Dubai about a possible assignment for him with the national team.

This time Waqar who is settled in Australia has shown interest in the coaching assignment but also kept forth some strong conditions to sign a fresh contract the source said adding that he had demanded to have a proper say in selection matters including sitting with the selectors when a touring side is being decided.

He has also asked for more authority and a pay package equivalent to what the board is paying Whatmore, the source added.

Waqar was head coach of the national team in 2010 and 2011 and the team fared well under him reaching the semi final of the 2011 World Cup in India. But the former fast bowler ended his contract prematurely in September 2012 on personal and health grounds.

The source further said said there was also talk about handing Younis Khan the additional responsibility of being the team s batting coach besides playing in the Test matches. (APP)
