ICC urged to probe Zeeshan episode
Source: The Nation | 09-12-2012

The captain of Pakistan Blind T20 Cricket team has been hospitalised after consuming acid reportedly he mistook it for water, reportedly private channels on Saturday.

The captain, who is leading national Blind Cricket team in Twenty-20 World Cup Cricket Tournament being played in Bangalore, was (apparently) made to drink the hazardous liquid as the acid glass was served during breakfast. Just yesterday, Pakistan blind cricket team thrashed India by eight wickets in the tournament.  A report from an Indian news agency quoted that Zeeshan accidentally drank diluted phenyl in his hotel mistaking it for mineral water and was hospitalised, official sources said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan High Commissioner in India lodged protest to the Indian government over the incident and demanded action against the culprits who tried to disgrace India and attempt to kill Pakistani blind cricket team captain.

Zeeshan Abbasi (28), took a sip of the content of a plastic bottle that was kept on the table during the breakfast, sources said.

Meanwhile, Abbasi was discharged at 4.30pm and he is absolutely fine, the president of the hospital, Dr Shetty, was quoted as saying. Dr Shetty said that Zeeshan had had an endoscopy and all the results were normal.

Pakistan team manager Sultan Shah said the hotel had apologised for the incident, but they wanted it probed further. "We want to know from the hotel management, who have orally apologised to us, how such an incident happened and who is responsible for such negligence," Shah said. "It has to be ensured that such incidents do not recur. Otherwise, we are happy with the arrangements here."

SP Nagesh, the president of the All Indian Cricket Association, also called for an investigation: "[The hotel must] tell us how such a lapse occurred. We are awaiting their reply."

Meanwhile, the cricketing circles in Pakistan and particularly in Lahore have expressed concerns over the incident and demanded the organisers to conduct an inquiry into the incident to avoid any such happening in the remaining matches of the tournament. If any person found involved in the \'life attempt\' on the Pakistan team captain Zeeshan Abbas must be brought to book, they added.

It seemed that the organisers failed to provide security to their guests during the World Cup for Blind. The International Cricket Council should also look into the matter and order an inquiry into the incident to avoid any such happening in their recognised event and take action against the organisers of the World Cup for Blinds tournament.
