Junaid proves his credentials yet again
Source: The Nation | 31-12-2012

Junaid Khan proved his credential yet again in the first one-dayer of the three-match series against arch-rivals as he removed Indian top order batsmen at M Chidambaram Stadium under heavy conditions on Sunday.

Firts Junaid Khan, then Nasir Jamshed and Younus Khan laid the foundation and played vital roles in Pakistan team six wickets victory against India on their soil. Though Irfan also bowled well but he needs more improvement to cement his place in team.

Junaid earlier sent Indian top orders batsmen back to pavilion i.e. Sehwag, Kohli, Yuvraj and Rohit Sharma and during Pakistan innings Younus Khan put Pakistan innings on track with a fine half-century to beat India by 6 wickets to go one up in the series.

Earlier, B Kumar kept Indian hopes alive by sending Hafeez back on the very first ball of the Pakistan innings when the opener misjudged a ball of the pacer as he left but ball cut back sharply and struck the off-stump. Hafeez was surprised over his judgement but has to leave the field. Nasir and Azhar both struggled in the first 10 overs and it was evident that Azhar was not suitable for the ODI format. Management should replace him through Harris Sohail who is an explosive player and can turn table on the opponents on his day. Missing of Nasir run out by Kumar on a direct through proved the turning point of the match and that let Indian down.

Younus Khan and Nasir Jamshed steadied Pakistan innings and Younus hit the first boundary in 11.5 overs. Younus after observing the pace of wicket started playing his natural game and kept momentum going but after the departure of Younus after scoring 58 runs, Nasir Jamshed kept one end block with Misbah but the skipper did not stay long and was deceived by pacer Ishant Sharma and was bowled on a slow delivery. Nasir Jamshed kept score board ticking and completed his second one-day century and along with Shoaib Malik helped Pakistan shatter Indians victory dream who were tipped favour for the match.

Earlier Pakistan future prospect fast bowler Junaid Khan justified his captain Misbah-ul-Haq's decision to bowl first in damp conditions with a four-wicket haul, which cleaned up the Indian top order. The big four of the Indian batting order were all bowled, three of them by Junaid, who seemed unplayable in the damp conditions due to overnight rain.

But to start with, it seemed like a nightmare unfolding for India with struggling opener Virender Sehwag becoming Junaid's first victim. The Delhi batsman, considered a game-changer for his ability to take the attack to the opposition, swung it Pakistan's way after slogging for 11 balls to get four runs. Rohit Sharma also became fourth victim of Junaid Khan after scratching around for 14 deliveries for his four runs and at that stage India was struggling 29/5 in 10 overs.

Sehwag failed to pick a Junaid's in-swinger, which crashed into his middle and off stumps. What followed was a procession of sorts as the top half of the Indian line-up made quick return to the dressing room. Gautam Gambhir (8), Virat Kohli (0) and Yuvraj Singh (2) made blink-and-miss appearances as Junaid worked his magic, getting ample support from M Irfan and pace spearhead Umar Gul.

The cautious duo added 73 runs for the sixth wicket and defied Pakistani bowlers for a good 23 overs. Dhoni got a life on 16 when in the 26th over rival skipper Misbah-ul Haq dropped him at midwicket of M Hafeez's bowling and the Indian, who smashed seven fours and three sixes, made it count.

Dhoni was suffering from dehydration and also battled cramps towards the end of India innings. Raina's patient innings came to an end when he lost his leg stump to Hafeez. Dhoni saved Indian blushes with 125-ball unbeaten 113 runs. Indian skipper also completed 7,000 ODI runs, rescued the hosts with some fine support from Suresh Raina (43) and R Ashwin (31 not out). Dhoni and Ashwin shared the best-ever seventh-wicket partnership for India.

Junaid Khan whenever provided with a chance to represent Pakistan, delivered for his country but unluckily or selectors kindness he was sit out at the benches for reasons best known to the selection committee. This is a great injustice with Junaid Khan who always delivered for Pakistan instead of disappointing over the selectors attitude he work more harder to keep himself fit and in bowling rhythm.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf must look into the matter and made accountable the selection committee for his ouster from the Pakistan team despite having so good performances in his credit. Zaka should personally monitor his performance and acknowledge Junaid's performances that will help him a lot and boost his morale for the future assignments.

Indian pacer B Kumar bowled first spell brilliantly and took two wickets and in that period he appeared to be unplayable. Dinda and Ishant Sharma were the other successful bowlers from India.

Following new rules were observed during the first ODI:

Two bouncers were allowed in one over, one new ball at either end. End of Batting Power Play.-At least five fielders inside the 30-yard circle throughout the 50 overs. Availing of bowling Power Play by the end of 40 over.
