The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has said that appointment of the caretaker chief minister of Sindh should be made on merit and without any prejudice.
A meeting of the MQM coordination committee held simultaneously in Karachi and London observed that Mohajirs should be considered eligible for the post, said a press release on Thursday. It said the meeting noted with concern that no Mohajir had been suggested as a possible candidate for the position by any of the stakeholders.
It was even being said that a Mohajir would not be accepted as Sindh’s chief minister even if he or she was held competent for the post, said the handout. The committee said it was beyond comprehension why the names of Mohajir retired judges, former bureaucrats and other eminent personalities were not being considered for the position and whether only old Sindhis had the right to become caretaker chief minister of the province.
According to the press release, the meeting asked for how long would the Mohajirs not be considered the ‘sons of the soil’. The meeting noted that elders of the Mohajir community had struggled and sacrificed a lot for the creation of Pakistan and yet their children were being considered second-class citizens a full 65 years after independence.
The meeting resolved that the MQM would choose the name of a person for the post of caretaker CM keeping in view his/her character and reputation irrespective of whether he was a new or old Sindhi, said the handout.
