PPP playing ‘BJP card’ to postpone polls: Shahbaz
Source: The Nation | 29-01-2013

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the PPP move to create Bahawalpur Janoobi Punjab (BJP) province aims at postponement of the elections, while his brother and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif reiterated that creation of new provinces should not be based on linguistic or ethnic grounds.Talking to journalists after a PML-N consultative meeting over the proposed province here Monday, Shahbaz Sharif said that by bring all focus on Punjab division the ruling party at centre also seeks to throw the demands for creating new provinces out of the other provinces as well to the backburner.

He said that amalgamation of Bahawalpur to other areas of southern Punjab was a bizarre idea and another attempt of Zardari to push the country to the verge of disaster. The CM vowed to get the Bahawalpur province restored whose capital, he said, would be city of Bahawalpur. He said his party will also carve out another province in southern Punjab which will have Multan its capital. He said the Punjab Assembly had unanimously carried a resolution a year ago for carving out the said two provinces and sent the same to the federal government for legislation but the latter slept over it and did nothing. And now it has rose to create BJP.Shahbaz said if the federal government presented a bill for establishing Bahawalpur Janoobi Punjab (BJP) province in the National Assembly, his party will also move a bill for the constitutional amendment in light of the already carried resolution by the Punjab Assembly.

He said Zardari and his cronies are out to get the election postponed and drama of BJP is being staged for this purpose. But his party will not let them succeed, he vowed. The Punjab CM said when the people of southern Punjab were inundated in floods, Zardari was enjoying in Paris. Today the people of that part are justified to question Zardari where he was in that testing time and why he came to southern Punjab to satisfy his love for hunting. He said Zardari and his cronies know well that they have failed to serve the masses over the five years rule and continued to loot the public money, thus they have nothing to face the people in the election.Shahbaz Sharif said the PPP in the first place, played Dr Tahirul Qadri’s long march drama now it was doing another under the pretext of creating BJP which both have one purpose i.e. sabotaging the election.

However, he said the people have seen through their intentions and would not let their designs get through. The CM said the federal government should have formed a national commission to work out things in light of resolution passed by the Punjab Assembly for the restoration of Bahawalpur Province and creating South Punjab Province.Earlier, while chairing his party’s consultative meeting in Model Town Lahore, Nawaz Sharif said that creation of new provinces should only be based on administrative grounds. He said the PPP was raising the slogan of dividing Punjab on political and ethnic grounds.

Ch Nisar Ali Khan told the media that his party will table constitutional amendment bill for creating Janoobi Punjab province and restoration of Bahawalpur province when the government will bring a bill for creating new provinces in the National Assembly. He said the commission for the BJP was headed by a staff officer to Zardari and was represented by the coalition partners of the PPP while Punjab was not given any representation therein.
