West Ham frustrate Liverpool
Source: Tribune | 08-04-2013

Liverpool failed to breakdown a resilient West Ham side, dashing hopes of a top-five finish as Brendan Rodgers’ team fell short of capitalising on countless chances in a 0-0 draw at home to West Ham United yesterday.

West Ham, still without a victory at Anfield since 1963, defended superbly to collect a point that keeps them away from the Premier League relegation fight, but the afternoon was one of frustration for the home side.

Once the game was under way, Liverpool dominated possession, although it was not until first-half injury time that West Ham goal-keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen looked remotely flustered. The Finnish international struggled to cope with a Luis Suarez corner and was required to save twice from full-back Glen Johnson; rare examples of the West Ham number one being put under genuine pressure.

Liverpool manager Rodgers had to make a substitution after 25 minutes when Daniel Sturridge replaced Stewart Downing, due to injury. But, the home team could not blame that reshuffle for an underwhelming first-half display.Meanwhile, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s late goal salvaged a 2-2 draw for Tottenham Hotspur against Everton after a topsy-turvy encounter.

Arsenal’s fighting spirit gives Wenger hopeArsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the battling qualities shown by his side will ensure they qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Wenger’s side secured a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion thanks to two goals from Czech Republic international Tomas Rosicky.“I believe we will do it,” said Wenger. “We are conscious as well we have to give 100 per cent commitment in every game and it will be difficult and edgy to the end.”
