Hiddink quits Anzhi job
Source: Geo News | 23-07-2013

MOSCOW: Guus Hiddink has quit as manager of big-spending Russian Premier League big-spenders Anzhi Makhachkala, the club announced Monday.

The Dutchman's resignation was accepted and his fellow-Dutchaman Rene Meulensteen, appointed to replace him.

Former Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen only joined Anzhi during the close season but has already been introduced to the players as the new head coach. "The club decided to accept Hiddink's resignation request," the Anzhi website stated. "We would like to thank Mr Hiddink for his significant contribution into the club's development and wish him success in his subsequent career."

Hiddink, former Russia national manager, joined Anzhi on an 18-month contract in February 2012 and only last month decided to extend his stay by a year.

Last season Hiddink led Anzhi to third place in the Russian championship, the club's highest-ever league finish.

Anzhi have had an indifferent start to the new season, picking up just one point in their first two matches.

Hiddink said his decision to resign had been a difficult one. "It was an uneasy decision for me but I always said that my mission in Anzhi may come to an end when the club will be able to develop further without my participation," the club quoted Hiddink as saying. (AFP)
