Energy policy aims to eliminate load shedding in 3-4 years: PM
Source: Geo News | 23-07-2013

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the government’s National Energy Policy aimed to eliminate load shedding in three to four years.

Addressing the meeting of Council of Common Interests (CCI) here on Tuesday, the prime minister said that Pakistan is generating 45 percent power from furnace oil which he said is very expensive.

Nawaz Sharif said that his government wanted to move low cost electricity generation projects forward in a transparent manner.

During his address, the prime minister also announced to initiate building of Gadani Energy Corridor.

He said that restructuring of power tariff is an important part of National Energy Policy. Subsidy would be given to consumers of 200 units, he added.

The prime minister further said that 1400 MW power would be added to the system in the current year.

According to the legal framework formulated by ministry of water and power, if anyone found to have tempered the transmission of electricity would be awarded three-year imprisonment or Rs 10 million fine or both.

The ministry of water and power also advised to award two-year imprisonment or Rs 3 million fine or both to those involved in damaging the transmission line or power theft.

One-year jail term or Rs 1 million fine or both could be awarded on tampering the domestic power meters while meddling in commercial meters could cause 3-year imprisonment or Rs 6 million fine or both.
