The 24th Constitutional Amendment Bill was adopted with a two-third majority for the creation of a new province in Punjab.
The bill was tabled by Federal Law Minister Farooq H. Naek.The PML-N and some other parties boycotted the session against the bill amid strong protest.Some amendments recommended by Independent Senator Mohsin Leghari were dismissed while Sardar Ali managed to get his proposals approved.As many as 70 votes were cast in favour of the bill against none. The MQM also supported the government in approval of the bill.
Opposition Leader Senator Ishaq Dar that water, distribution of resources and administrative matters were ignored in the bill.The rulers, he said, should think about the country’s interests and refrain from doing politics.Senator Mir Hasil Bajenjo said that there should be no politics on the division of provinces.Law Minister Naek felicitated the people of Bahawalpur and South Punjab for the approval of the bill. He said that deprivations of South Punjab would be removed through the new province.
