wanted in multibillion corruption scam, has been finally arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).“Tauqir Sadiq has been arrested in Abu Dhabi after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) provided relevant documents to the local authorities,” NAB spokesman Zafar Iqbal Khan said.Sadiq, wanted by NABin a graft scam of Rs82 billion, will be deported from Abu Dhabi to Pakistan after completion of legal formalities.
The accused is a close relative of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Secretary General Jahangir Badar.A NAB official said that Abu Dhabi would deport Sadiq as he could not be extradited because of the absence of any agreement between the UAE and Pakistan on extradition. Earlier, the Interpol in Abu Dhabi on the request of NAB had located Sadiq but he could not be arrested due to unfulfilled legal requirements.
A NAB deputy director had recently visited the UAE to hand over the required documents and evidence regarding corruption cases against Sadiq to authorities to get issued his arrest warrants from a local court. The NAB spokesman said either the bureau could dispatch its officer to the UAE to get the accused into its custody or appoint its nominee from the Pakistani embassy there for this purpose. He said that two Pakistani police officials were already there for this purpose. The spokesman said that request for mutual legal assistance and issuance of arrest warrants from a local courtwere required for the deportation of any fugitive living in the UAE.
