Just relax and enjoy game, Inzamam tells Afridi
Source: The Nation | 21-12-2012

The explosive all-rounder Shahid Afridi has said that newly appointed batting consultant of Pakistan team Inzamamul Haq had advised him to just relax and play his natural game and stop thinking about any external pressure regarding his poor form and only enjoy his batting.

Inzamam advice helped him to regain some form as he scored two blistering half centuries in the previous two practice matches between the two Pakistan squads for the preparation of India tour. "Inzi bhai told me to stop thinking about any outside pressures and just relax and enjoy the game, especially my batting," Afridi said after an impressive 64-ball 92 knock during a one-day practice match laced with 11 boundaries and two sixes at the Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

When he first came to the camp, I thought he would be telling me about the technique and batting but he didn't say anything regarding that." said Afridi. "But he said there is nothing wrong with my batting and I only need to get my confidence back and the best way to do it is to go and play my natural game," Boom Boom Afridi added. The 32-year-old all-rounder has endured an extended lean patch over the last two years, failing to deliver both with willow and leather. He has scored 182 runs in his last sixteen One-day internationals with just only one half century.

He also failed to impress with his leg-spin bowling during that period which resulted his ouster from the Pakistan One-day squad for the India tour but has been retained in the T20 squad though. His outings in the ICC World T20 Championship in Sri Lanka a draw him severe criticism from Pakistan’s cricketing fraternity, with the majority blaming the out-of-form all-rounder for the team’s eventual semi-final exit due to his poor form.Afridi admitted that he had been under pressure for a while now.

I’ve been under pressure for a while now and I want to get over it," he said, who is best known for scoring fastest ODI century, off just 37 balls. "I’ve stopped thinking about what will happen next. I just want to go and do my best and enjoy my game," he added further.Inzamam, one of Pakistan’s all-time batting greats, was last week appointed as the national batting consultant for the forthcoming tours of India and South Africa. He will spend a week with the players at the conditioning camp in Lahore before team departure for India on December 22.

The camp is concluded on Thursday and after one-day rest the Pakistan team will leave for India on December 22 for the much-awaited India tour to be started from December 25 to January 6, 2013. Inzamam will not proceed to India with the team due to his personal commitments but has agreed to tour South Africa with the national team. The tour will commence from the last week of January 2013 to March 2013.
